German cycling coach Patrick Moster has been suspended for the remainder of the year by sport’s governing body, the UCI, for using racist language at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The Sporting Director of the German Cycling Union was heard shouting ‘catch the camel drivers’ at Nikias Arndt as the rider chased Eritrean Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier and Algerian Azzedine Lagab in the Games time trial.
Moster was fired from Japan and called to resign, but he remains in office. However, he suffered a pay cut and was withdrawn from the competition indefinitely by his employers.

In a statement, the UCI declared: âMr. Moster admitted before the disciplinary commission that he had committed a violation of the UCI regulations and accepted the imposition of a suspension until December 31, 2021, period during which Mr. Moster may not participate in any capacity in any competition or activity authorized or organized by the UCI, a continental confederation or a member national federation. “
Moster will be technically free to resume events in January, provided the German Cycling Union allows him to do so.
“The UCI condemns all forms of racist and discriminatory behavior and strives to ensure integrity, diversity and equality in cycling,” said the governing body.
