The United States and the Holocaust (PBS): The essential three-part series from Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein chronicles how Americans grappled with one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the 20th century and how that struggle tested the ideals of our democracy. . According to PBS, “The film dispels competing myths that Americans either ignored what was happening to Jews in Europe, or simply watched with callous indifference. The truth is much more nuanced and complicated, and the challenges facing the American people faced raise questions that remain central to our society today: what is America’s role as a land of immigrants? What are a nation’s responsibilities in responding to humanitarian crises? should our leaders and the press do to shape public opinion? What can individuals do when governments fail to act?” Part one will air tonight, but due to the Queen’s funeral, episode two will air on Tuesday September 20 and episode three on Wednesday September 21. 8 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS, and the PBS video app.
