Lionel Messi wins record seventh Ballon d’Or: reports Darren Wells

Lionel Messi has been lambasted by the German media after his stance on Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Polish sniper was crowned the Best FIFA Men’s Player 2021 on Monday night, edging out second-placed Messi to the crown.

Two months earlier, the Argentine beat the Pole to claim his record seventh Ballon d’Or title as he clinch the 2021 accolade.

Messi edging out Lewandowski in the Ballon d’Or vote led to several footballing legends criticizing the decision and claiming the Bayern striker was judged unfairly.

Despite scoring 38 goals in his final season for Barcelona and winning Argentina’s first international tournament since 1993, things haven’t gone according to plan for Messi since his high-profile summer move to Paris Saint-Germain.

Have your say! Did Lewandowski or Messi have a stronger 2021? Tell us what you think here.

Lewandowski has never won a Ballon d’Or title – having somewhat controversially missed out on Messi for 2021 and due to the awards being canceled the previous year.

The Bayern hitman is the deadliest player on the planet – his barely believable prowess saw him score 48 goals in 40 appearances last season and average more than that this time around, with 34 goals in 26 exits.

He broke Gerd Muller’s goalscoring record in the Bundesliga last year with a barely believable 41 goals in just 28 league starts.

For many, Lewandowksi is unquestionably the best player in the world right now but Messi hasn’t named him in his three best players in the world in 2021.

Bild points this out as a possible ulterior motive of Messi, who saw Lewandowski as his main rival and wanted to deprive him of points.

The German outlet wrote ‘Shame on you, Messi’ as they placed Paris Saint-Germain teammates Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in the top three alongside Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema.

It is highlighted how Cristiano Ronaldo put Lewandowski at the top of his list ahead of Chelsea midfield pair N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

Lewandowski, for his part, voted for Jorginho in first place ahead of Messi.

Lewandowski was unsurprisingly rated number one by German boss Hansi Flick – previously of Bayern – and club teammate Manuel Neuer, who did not consider Messi in their top three.

Lewandowski said of his PSG counterpart’s selection: “Those are very nice words from Messi to the Ballon d’Or.

“Now, with his choice, you have to ask him!

“I haven’t done anything wrong for him to be mad at me except my athletic production.

“It’s his decision, I don’t want to say anything negative.”

Lewandowski has now overtaken Messi in The Best of FIFA titles – the Poland international has now won the gong in 2020 and 2021, with Messi’s only title coming in 2019 from the award that started in 2016.
