The DEep dIve book discussion group, based at Newtown High School and open to all members of the community, has scheduled its next meeting for Wednesday, April 27 at 6 p.m. at Newtown High School Lecture Hall, 12 Berkshire Road.
The group will discuss The purple colorby Alice Walker.
A description of the book on the group’s website reads: “A powerful cultural touchstone of modern American literature, The purple color depicts the lives of African American women in rural Georgia in the early 20th century. Separated as daughters, sisters Celie and Nettie maintain their loyalty and hope for each other through time, distance and silence. Through a series of letters spanning twenty years, first from Celie to God, then the sisters to each other despite the unknown, the novel draws readers into its rich and memorable portrayals of Celie, Nettie, Shug Avery and Sofia and their experience. The purple color broke the silence around domestic and sexual abuse, telling the story of women’s lives through their pain and struggle, their camaraderie and growth, their resilience and bravery. Deeply compassionate and beautifully imagined, Alice Walker’s epic takes readers on a mind-affirming journey toward redemption and love.
