READ THE WAR DIARY OF UKRAINIAN NOVELIST AND PHOTOGRAPHER YEVGENIA BELORUSETS

Yevgenia Belorusets (winner of the International Prize for Literature) writes a remarkable war diary from Kiev, updated in real time and published by ISOLARII.

Published daily at 4:00 p.m. EST, the newspaper’s purpose is not to convey what is happening from above, but what it feels like on the ground. Since Monday, it has already gained traction, with multiple translations to come in media around the world.

This is part of ISOLARII’s ongoing project with Yevgenia, publicly available at www.isolarii.com/kyiv. It is also in German with der Spiegel and republished on Artforum.com

Belorusets wrote MODERN ANIMAL last year, after spending six years in the Donbass interviewing victims of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Many were unable to directly discuss the war, so Belarusians instead asked them about animals, constructing metaphors and symbols of life along a border haunted by death. Belorusets fictionalized these interviews in collaboration with his subjects, making MODERN ANIMAL perhaps precisely what comes after autofiction, and offering insight into the psychology of Ukrainian wartime resistance, resilience and courage. His novel, LUCKY BREAKS, is also published by New Directions this week.

Yevgenia Belorusets MODERN ANIMAL

Along with the newspaper, ISOLARII republishes MODERN ANIMAL with 100% of profits going directly to support and relief efforts for Ukraine.

The community – of authors and readers – is at the heart of ISOLARII’s vision of how media platforms work. Not only are publishers completely invested in their authors’ worlds, but they bring those worlds directly to readers, with moments like this in mind.

It’s no surprise that a follower recently wrote:

“Like many members of the ISOLARII community, I have been worried about Yevgenia and thought of her for the past few days. Each diary update feels like a common prayer.

ISOLARII has reissued modern animals with 100% of profits donated to Ukrainian charities and causes. Copies and more information are available HERE.
