MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – September 02, 2022) The German federal government believes that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s statement that it will support Ukraine as much as necessary, regardless of the opinion of its voters, has been taken out of context, according to the department spokesman Christopher Burger said Friday.
“It is important to understand the context of this. The Foreign Minister is convinced that we must continue to support Ukraine, that it is in Germany’s interest and in the interest of the people We must not be blackmailed by Russia any further,” Burger said at a press briefing on Friday, noting that Germany should instead do what it deems “right”, which is to support the Ukraine in its “struggle for independence”.
According to the spokesperson, Baerbock also said that this policy should have social consequences and that Germans should not be left to their own devices to deal with issues such as high energy prices which Russia used as ” armed”.
Burger also noted that it’s important to understand what context these words are placed in before sharing them anywhere.
During his speech in Prague on Wednesday, Baerbock promised to support Ukraine for as long as necessary, regardless of the opinion of German voters, which drew widespread condemnation in Germany, especially among opposition parties. Former Left Party leader Sahra Wagenknecht called Baerbock’s statement a “mistake” and a “danger” for the country, while Alternative for Germany co-leader Alice Weidel called for resignation of the minister.
